Fairford has become a Walkers are Welcome town.

Walkers are Welcome is a national network made up of towns and villages which have something special to offer walkers.

More than 75 communities in Britain now have Walkers are Welcome status, sharing experiences and ideas to improve opportunities and facilities for walking. This brings many advantages. It strengthens a town’s reputation as a place for visitors to come to enjoy the outdoors, bringing useful benefits to the local economy. It helps to ensure that footpaths and facilities for walkers are developed and maintained in good condition, benefiting local people as well as visitors. It can contribute to local tourism plans and regeneration and green strategies.

Fairford has a wealth of interesting local footpaths, including river and lakeside walks, and a Heritage trail round the town. This includes historical features in the area, notably Fairford Church with its world-famous stained glass windows. There are varied walks of different distances including picturesque Cotswold villages and walks in the Cotswold Water Park linking with the Thames Path.

Ian Westlake, chair of the local Walkers are Welcome committee, said “We have lots of ideas for developing and improving local walks which we hope will attract more visitors as well as interest local people. We feel that promoting local walks will help the community, encourage tourists to stay longer and spend more money in local shops, boost the economy and raise the profile of Fairford.”

Fairford Town Council is strongly supportive of Fairford as a Walkers are Welcome town. It already produces a walks booklet and leaflets, available from the council office in Fairford Community Centre, and has 7 downloadable walks and Heritage trail available from the Council’s website

Future plans are for developing a footpath/cycle link between Fairford and Lechlade and possible walk routes between the towns, and a Walking/Heritage festival, possibly as part of the annual Fairford Festival.
